There full name is the Advertising standards authority.
Who do they regulate? Which areas of the media?
The ASA regulate all types of advertising across the United Kingdom, they make sure that all adverts are legal and to quality standard before they go out on air, or out onto billboards and posters. The ASA regulate in these areas of the media; Print and press complaints, Posters, Television commercials, radios ads, Internet ads (banners, pop-ups, sponsored search but not company websites), Email and text messages, Direct mail, competitions, special offers, sales promotion, Cinema commercials and teleshopping.
Are they regulatory or self-regulatory?
The ASA are a self-regulatory company.
Give 2-3 examples of the specific codes that they put into practice
Thanks to the ASA up to 2,500 were either changed or taken off air in 2008, this was done by a range of effective sanctions and the help of the advertisers agreeing with the ASA’s decision.

The national union of journalists regulate; staffers, freelancers, writers, reporters, editors and sub-editors, photographers and illustrators. They regulate in these types of the media; broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, books and in public relations.
Are they regulatory or self-regulatory?
The national union of journalists is a self-regulatory union.

Here are 2-3 examples of the specific codes that they put into practice
1. Protects the identity of sources who supply information in confidence and material gathered in the course of her/his work
2. Does nothing to intrude into anybody’s private life, grief or distress unless justified by overriding consideration of the public interest
3. Obtains material by honest, straightforward and open means, with the exception of investigations that are both overwhelmingly in the public interest and which involve evidence that cannot be obtained by straightforward means

What is there full name?
There full name is the Press Complaints Commission.
Who do they regulate? Which areas of the media?
The Press Complaints Commission regulates all the editorial content of newspapers and magazines. They work within the press industry.
Are they regulatory or self-regulatory?
The PCC are a self-regulatory body which deals with the editorial content of magazines and newspapers.
Give 2-3 examples of the codes of practice that they put into place
1. Journalists have a moral obligation to protect confidential sources of information.
2. The press must avoid prejudice or pejorative reference to an individual’s race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or to any physical or mental illness or disability.
3. The press must not identify victims of sexual assault or publish material likely to contribute to such identification unless there is adequate justification and they are legally free to do so.
4. In cases involving personal grief or shock, enquiries and approaches must be made with sympathy and discretion and publication handled sensitively. This should not restrict the right to report legal proceedings, such as inquests

Legal and ethical restrictions
What is the difference between criminal law and civil law?
The difference between criminal law and civil law is, that criminal law is going against the moral principles of society where the persecutor is normally punished by fines or loses of freedom through imprisonment or probation. Whereas civil law are things that are against the law because people say they are, like speeding and parking violations, they were result in loses of freedom but they can result to fines and lose of privileges.
Health and safety when doing a photo shoot
Here is some health and safety checks you would look out for before doing a photo shoot whether it be on location or in the studio;
1. Check for lose cables so that people don’t trip over and either hurt themselves of break the equipment.
2. Make sure the backdrop is secured to floor so people don’t fall on it or trip over.
3. Make sure the lights aren’t too close to the backdrop as it may set alight.
4. Make sure that people are aware that the lights are warm and not stupid enough to touch them
5. Make sure that if you are on location that it is a suitable location to film on

What is Copyright?
Copyright is the set of exclusive rights granted to the author or created of an original work, including the right to adapt copy and distribute the work.
How does copyright protect you as the author of some text or a set of images?
Copyright helps to protect you as the writer or photographer, because it means that no one else can steal your work or recreate without your permission otherwise they would be breaking the law and they can actually be fined a vast amount.
Libel Law
What is defamation?
Defamation is a false accusation of an offense or a malicious misrepresentation of some ones words or actions.
What is libel?
Libel is a false and malicious publication printed for the purpose of defaming a living person
What is slander?
Slander is words falsely spoken that damage the reputation of another.
Data protection act
What is the data protection act?
The data protection act is the policy that controls how all your personal information is used by corporations, or the government. Its rules require everyone who collects data to follow strict rules, and to keep your information safe.
Give 3 examples where you feel that groups or individuals have been treated unfairly in the media
1. When the media says that all teenagers who go round in groups and that wear tracksuits are supposed to be dangerous and troublemakers not all people who wear tracksuits are like this.
2. How one of the politicians is saying on air that he wants to ban homosexuality that is not fair to all the gay couples in the UK.
3. How all people who listen to heavy metal or soft rock is either a druggy or a self harmer. Not everyone who listens to heavy metal does drugs.
